As long as they’ve got their suits and ties, Delta Upsilon’s going to leave it all on the floor. On March 28, Her Campus at Penn State, Sisters on the Runway and the Delta Upsilon fraternity hosted ‘Suit Up With Her’ — the trio’s second-annual date auction benefiting the Centre County Women’s Resource Center. Starting at 7 p.m., the night consisted of speakers, entertainment, raffles, food and bidding on nearly 50 of Penn State’s eligible bachelors. The highest bidders won the opportunity to go on a date with their man of choice.

According to Layla Taremi, the date auction is one of many Sisters on the Runway fundraisers held throughout the year. Taremi (senior-marketing, international business minor), Penn State’s SOTR President, has been working closely with the non-profit before she and current Vice President Lauren Shearer brought it to Centre County in 2013.

“My sophomore year of high school, I went to the UMass Amhearst SOTR fashion show and I listened to the speakers, victims from the shelter, saw performances and I was like ‘I need to do this at my high school,’” Taremi said.

Taremi brought SOTR, a non-profit based on raising awareness and fighting against domestic violence, to her high school in 2011. She chose to continue spreading awareness by bringing the non-profit to Penn State when she came here her freshman year.

“One in four women are affected [by domestic violence] and one in seven men are. It’s a huge issue everywhere,” Taremi said.

Taremi isn’t the only one to see importance in combatting domestic violence.

“I think the date auction is a great way for the Penn State community to come together and for Greek life, it’s a great way for us to expand our network to groups like Her Campus and Sisters on the Runway,” Matt Magid (sophomore-biology), Delta Upsilon’s vice president of external relations, said.

According to Her Campus writer and date auction volunteer, Samantha Grillo (sophomore-broadcast journalism), the men volunteering can either be auctioned off independently or by a group of people. Each man will also have their own walk-out song, bio and what someone can expect from buying a date from them. The starting price for each man is $5.

Magid also noted that though the theme was Suit Up with Her, guests were welcome to dress as casual as they please.

“One of my favorite parts of the night was just seeing all the girls get so excited and seeing the guys confidently rock the runway,” Taremi said. “People went nuts.”
