Founders Day 2019 Honors Brothers Dinsmore and Dunkelberger

By John DelSignore ‘92

Founders Day 2019 was celebrated May 17-19 and a good time was had by all.  Brothers and significant others enjoyed the relaxed environment at Penn State as the event was held on a non football, non Blue-White weekend.

On Friday night a gathering took place at the Chapter house as many congregated in the Egan room for good music and refreshments.  Ryan Mullin ‘11 conducted a meet & greet session in the middle of it all to allow the Brothers and guests from different areas to get to know each other.

On Saturday, Brother Jeff Miller ‘92 marveled at the automatic pancake maker at the Holiday Inn Express before he and his older brother Bill Miller ‘90 proceeded to dominate the golf outing and sweep the skills competitions!  Those not golfing had time to visit local breweries, vineyards or another activity of their choosing.

All Brothers and guests gathered back at Toftrees for the Founders Day Awards Banquet.  President Gerrit van Burk ‘91 led the evening with an update on on the chapter and plans for future events including Fall regional watch parties (date TBA) and a block of tickets available the October 5 game against Purdue.

The focus was then on this year’s award winners.  Bill Miller presented the Founders Day Award to Brother Jeff Dunkelberger ‘90.  “Dunk” reflected on what  DU has meant to him and delivered a message to always stay connected to our Brothers throughout our lives.

It was then time for the presentation of the Prutzman Award to Brother Ray Dinsmore ‘78.  Brother Jim Hyland ‘75 provided some comic relief before Brother Brenden Finn ‘12 came to the podium.  Brother Finn read remarks prepared by his Father, Brother Tim Finn ‘75 who was unable to attend.  Brenden did is best “Timo” impression with remarks detailing Brother Dinsmore’s many contributions to the Penn State DU Chapter.  The crowd participated by proclaiming “If not for Ray!” as a list of many of the chapter house improvements were read.

The night was capped with a speech by Brother Dinsmore giving thanks to the many who have been involved over the past decade.  He also made asked for others to jump in and help as the Undergraduate chapter faces more difficult times ahead. He shared some stories of his undergraduate days and gave us all a treat by recreating his famous “fro” composite picture from his college years!
