ONCE A DU, ALWAYS A DU

That’s what Brother John J. “Cy” Dubinsky (’59) said.  And he was proud of it.  His wife, Carole, informed us that Cy passed away on December 5, 2020.  She sent us this poignant email:

Dear family and friends:

Over the last couple years Cy has had a few illnesses and recovered nicely.  This time, he just wasn't able to recover from pneumonia.  He was under hospice care and died very peacefully on Sat., Dec. 5, at 8:00 a.m.

Each year Cy was a great one for emailing friends and relatives Christmas wishes.  Since he isn't available, I want to take this opportunity to extend good cheer to you and your families and hope that all the happiness of the holiday season will be yours throughout the new year.

Merry Christmas, Carole Dubinsky

Thank you, Carole.  Our prayers and condolences are extended to you and the family.

Who was Cy?  Beyond being smart, handsome, athletic, patriotic and marrying well, he was a DU once and always.  In 2014, we recognized his accomplishments.  Our Alumni Association presented him with a Founder’s Day Award because he deserved it.  The commemoration plaque said:

Cy Dubinsky is an outstanding educator and loving husband and father. As an undergraduate, Cy was a brother in the truest sense of the word.  As alum, he has always been there when Penn State Delta Upsilon has needed his help!  He made being a Penn State DU special! He has brought honor to Penn State and the Delta Upsilon Fraternity.

For a lively interview of Cy, you won’t be disappointed if you visit the link below.  He talks about football with Rip Engle, Joe Paterno, Rosey Greer.  Imagine those days when a college quarterback gets drafted into the US Army, does his service, and then comes back to complete his degree several years later.  That’s why you’ll find Cy on the football squad in 1952, but he didn’t graduate as a DU until 1959.  Amazing.  Please take the time to visit this link.

We love Cy.  Cy loved all his DU Brothers.  Once a DU, always a DU.  God Bless him.
